A large number of campervan buyers use their new purchase as a daily driver, often replacing a second car.
The campervan can still bring you the same benefits of running a large family car, such as an estate or SUV, while also being a fun leisure vehicle for your weekends and holidays.
But how much more room is there in a campervan, in particular a long wheelbase Volkswagen Transporter, than some other key large family cars?
Well for starters, a long wheelbase van is 5.3m in length (check out this guide for more details on that) so it's already about 40cm longer than the short wheelbase.
In our long wheelbase models (Portofino, Santorini, Monte Carlo LWB and St Tropez LWB) this translates into greater living space in the main seating area, creating a marked difference over the shorter 4.9m version.
How does this compare to the family car you might be looking to part exchange? Well we did some research and found that the long wheelbase Transporter is easily a foot longer than the latest Land Rover Discovery model (which measures 4.97m in length).
It's also longer than a BMW 5 Series Touring (4.96m), an Audi A6 Avant (4.93m) and a Skoda Octavia Estate (4.7m). In fact it's longer still than a Mercedes Benz GLS, which can be as long as 5.24m.
All this translates to more internal space, and therefore more room to kick back and relax in once you're on a campsite.
And don't fear, the long wheelbase Transporter is still highly manoeuvrable and will fit into the majority of car parking spaces, so you won't have the problems associated with larger, more cumbersome motorhomes. If you need to check this out for yourself, why not book yourself a Try Before You Buy experience, where you can put the long wheelbase campervans we sell to the test.
