CamperKing announces VW ID. Buzz campervan now in development

CamperKing has announced plans to develop a campervan based on the Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vehicle.

Since its launch in 2022, the ID. Buzz has been living up to its name and there's also a great deal of excitement about the prospect of a campervan based on the platform, which is designed to evoke the iconic shape of the much-loved VW Transporters of old.

CamperKing has now procured six of the VW ID. Buzz in order to develop a fully-electric campervan conversion and over the coming months will be looking into the viability of bringing a conversion to market.

Spencer Grey, CamperKing's Managing Director, said: "The prospect of an electric campervan is an exciting one, and what better model to base it on than the Buzz, which by its very nature will now start to take over in people's minds when they think of the iconic 'splitty' or 'bay window' campervans of the 1960s and 70s. It's an interesting challenge to attempt to convert it into a campervan, so we've been taking a very close look at it for a while and will continue to do so over the coming months. We sincerely hope to be able to make the Buzz campervan a reality."

The prospective campervan would include the same mod cons as all CamperKing conversions; cooking facilities, an onboard fresh water tank, comfortable double beds including one in a pop-top roof, a heating option and plenty of storage.

With plenty of interior space and up to 258 miles of electric range, the ID. Buzz boasts the latest EV technology including fast charging at up to 170kW, meaning the 77kWh battery can be replenished to 80% capacity in around 30 minutes.

As with all electric vehicles, all the torque is available from a standing start, so the ID. Buzz can record an enviable 0-62mph time of 10.6s thanks to the 150kW output.

Volkswagen has launched two versions of the Buzz, the passenger-carrying Style and the panel van Cargo. CamperKing will be using the Cargo to explore the prospect of a campervan conversion.

And it's already winning awards. The model took ‘Best Medium Electric Van’ at this year’s Driving Electric Awards 2023, with Editor, Richard Ingram, praising the vehicle for its “retro styling”, paired with the strong range and practical load bay.

Also winning the judges’ attention at the 2023 carwow Awards, the ID. Buzz received a ‘Buy It’ seal of approval after being praised for its iconic design and cutting-edge technology.

At the What Van? Awards, the ID. Buzz Cargo’s long range and innovative driver safety and convenience technologies were highlighted as judges crowned it ‘Electric Van of the Year 2023.’ At the same time, the ID. Buzz’s electric driving performance saw it take home ‘Best Van-Based MPV’ at the What Car? Van and Commercial Vehicle Awards.
